Joel's Cabinet

A cabinet of books and games worth digging through.

About

I'm a veterinary technician at a small animal clinic here in Boise, which mostly means I spend my day explaining the same handful of things to worried owners in slightly different words until it lands. That's probably why I gravitate toward the teaching side of any hobby. A rulebook is just another set of discharge instructions nobody's going to read twice, so I'd rather walk someone through it directly the first time and get it right.

I keep a cabinet, literal and otherwise, of the books and games I actually finish. Reading runs toward science fiction that shows its work, and lately toward stuff with no plot to speak of, dense character studies, essay collections I dip back into over years instead of reading straight through once. Games skew toward anything with real teeth in the rules, a card game or a war game that rewards knowing exactly what you're doing, though I'll happily reach for something lighter on a night when the whole table just wants to relax. My dog gets blamed for most of my reading choices lately, long story. I write these up when I've got something specific to say, not on any kind of schedule.

Where I am: Boise, Idaho

Still not sure what my dog's actual umwelt looks like. Working on it.

What's here

Book reviews, board game reviews, and whatever else I feel like writing about. No schedule, no affiliate links, nothing sponsored. I write about a book or a game when I've actually finished it and have something to say, which is why the dates on here are irregular.
